Ridata Turbo 32GB Flash Solid State Disks

The Ridata NSSD-S25-32-C02T initially seemed to us a slow drive, but when we graphed the overall performance and looked at the surprisingly fast write behavior in four and eight kilobyte block sizes (which are important because 3 out of every four writes in a FAT file system are 4kb Inodes), we realized that it's native performance graphs almost exactly like the performance of a 7,200 RPM 2.5" SATA drive. In fact, it almost seemed as if the Ridata drive was designed to mimic the overall performance of the 7,200 drive. But our aggregate IOPS test ranks it at 118, which is superior to the 70 of a 7,200 rpm SATA drive.

With MFT, the Ridata drive improves by a factor of 20 to a value of 2,382, which is about 20 times as fast as a 15,000 rpm SAS Hard Disk. The performance curve reflects the typical impact of MFT, but attenuates due to the Ridata's 70mb/sec linear read and 40mb/sec linear write speeds.

Given that the Ridata product is made with 100,000 erase cycle SLC Flash memory, it can be expected to live for five years in almost any environment. Overall, it is a judicious piece of engineering.

Aggregate IOPS without MFT 118 Higher is better. A single 15,000 rpm SAS drive has a value of 250, and a 7,200 rpm SATA drive rates at 70. Click here for explanation of calculation methodology.

Thruput per day is based upon an average data size of 10.66kb and a read/write mix of 70% reads and 30% writes. The values shown for the 7,200 and 15,000 rpm Hard Disks are the maximum possible attainable values if these drives are run at 100% duty cycle 7x24. Values for the flash media are calculated as described here. Here, the limit to throughput is not time, but rather the number of safely available write cycles based upon a goal-life of at least five years.
